HPV immunization policies
Health inequities
Key takeaways
- Many equity-denied populations experience higher rates of cancer and lower rates of HPV immunization. The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer is working closely with partners across the country to understand and address barriers faced by equity-denied populations and communities.
The Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control 2019-2029 and the Action Plan for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer in Canada, 2020-2030 (Action Plan) explicitly address the inequities and barriers in accessing prevention and care that are experienced by First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations and equity-denied communities, including recent immigrants, people with low income, and rural and remote communities. Explore the Action Plan to learn about the progress underway addressing inequities and barriers.
Partner highlight: Urban Public Health Network
Several communities and organizations are leading work to reduce inequities to accessing cancer prevention and care programs. To continue to address inequities in cancer rates and ensure that there is equitable uptake of HPV immunizations, the Urban Public Health Network (UPHN) is supporting partner organizations in leading projects to identify and address barriers to HPV immunization for school-aged children across Canada. Projects included engagements with under-immunized communities, including children and youth, parents and caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
